PJATK Named the Best Private University in Poland According to the “Rzeczpospolita” Ranking
From August 15–30, at the Monteripido Monastery in Perugia ⛪, visitors will be able to admire large-format works by Dr. Joanna Zakrzewska —vice dean and lecturer at the WSNM in Gdańsk.
These works have their roots in classical Japanese calligraphy 🖌️, yet the artist consciously goes beyond its traditional boundaries. She creates artworks that break away from their original models and, rather than relying on knowledge or familiarity with the language, direct the viewer’s attention toward emotions, intuition, and personal associations. 💭
Characters that have come from afar—from history, silence, and ink—become the starting point for a contemporary story here. ⛩️ Kanji, hiragana, and katakana—which have served to describe the world for centuries—take on a new dimension. Each character conveys not only meaning but also the rhythm of its lines, the energy of its gesture, and room for individual interpretation. You don’t need to know the language or the rules of calligraphy to understand their expression. 🍃
It is a form of calligraphy deeply rooted in Japanese culture 🎌, yet as open as contemporary art—inviting viewers to an encounter in which sensitivity, imagination, and personal experience take center stage.
Dr. Joanna Zakrzewska – Japanese studies scholar (Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń), calligrapher and illuminator ✒️, lecturer at the Polish-Japanese Academy of Computer Technology in Gdańsk (Japanese language courses, History and Culture of Japan, calligraphy). She earned her Ph.D. at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, in the Department of Graphic Arts.
Her academic research focuses on the aesthetics of Japanese art, particularly calligraphy and ink painting. 💮 She holds a 10th dan in Japanese calligraphy from the Seifū school. She is also a graduate of the Kraków School of Calligraphy, Illumination, and Related Fields.
She conducts workshops and demonstrations on Latin and Japanese calligraphy as well as book illumination. She is actively involved in the academic field 📚 (monograph *Sakuteiki – Notes on Garden Design*, *Rethinking Beauty: The Aesthetics of Japanese Calligraphy,” numerous scholarly publications, lectures, and conferences) as well as in the artistic sphere (solo and group exhibitions, and workshops).
