In October, the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology will host Alexandra Zsigmond - art director of Hammer&Hope and The New Yorker magazines (2021-2024) - within its walls.

The meetings with Ms. Alexandra, which we will host, will be a unique opportunity to draw inspiration from one of the most influential people in the world of illustration and editorial art. With her years of experience working for titles such as The New York Times and The New Yorker and working with thousands of artists around the world, Ms. Alexandra will share her perspective on the role of illustration in visual storytelling. This is a chance to get a behind-the-scenes look at the work of top-notch art directors, talk about current trends in art and design, and inspire your own creative pursuits.

As part of Ms. Alexandra's visit, we will host her for two lectures - in Gdansk and Warsaw, as well as a four-day workshop to be held for male and female students.

Inside the Editorial Eye lecture

Editorial illustration is much more than decoration - it is a visual language that makes ideas instantly visible and memorable. The lecture will look at symbolism in editorial art, with a particular focus on the motif of the eye as a sign of artificial intelligence, surveillance and psychology, as well as the ways in which images shape social and political discourse. The lecture in Gdansk will be held on 13.10 at 3:00 pm, and in Warsaw on 23.10 at 5:30 pm.

Illustrated Communication Festival ILUSTRATOR

As part of her visit to Poland, Ms. Alexandra will also participate in the ILLUSTRATOR festival, which will be held on 10-11.10. at the St. John's Center in Gdansk. The first day, Friday, will be devoted to workshops in an intimate format (seating is limited, registration is required), while Saturday will feature a day-long conference with illustrators and illustrators from around the world. In addition to Alexandra Zsigmond, participants will be able to listen to lectures by, among others: Ola Jasionowska, Ana Chubinidze or Jora Rosa.

The Art of the Spot workshop

Small illustrations can have a huge impact. During the intensive workshop, participants will create their own set of spots on a scientific topic of their choice, learning how to build a coherent, conceptual yet entertaining visual language. The work will culminate in a presentation of the projects directly in front of the art directors of The New Yorker magazine with a chance to be published. The workshops will take place from 20-24.10. Registration is open for each workshop. Enrollment will take place from 8-10.10.Students will receive an email with a booklet informing them about the different presenters, the topics of the classes and will be informed about how and when to enroll. In Ms. Alexandra's group we assume the number of 18-20 places.

Alexandra Zsigmond's visit is a project implemented by PJATK and funded by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FFSB).
