Open Day May 14, 2025

A great celebration of Japanese culture lovers is behind us!
The Japan Festival was held on June 8, 2024 at the Gdansk branch of the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology in Gdansk. This event combined tradition and modernity, juxtaposing culture and ancient customs with pop culture phenomena. From the art of ikebana and kokeshi dolls, to contemporary fantasy and cosplay.
The program was packed with lectures and workshops for people of all ages. One could listen to lectures on, among other things, the art of ikebana, geisha or fantastic creatures from Japanese mythology. The exhibitors' zone hosted publications with Japanese literature. A stand with rhythm and dance games popular in Japan was very popular. On the other hand, at the stand of PJATK Gdańsk, participants tested their knowledge of the cherry blossom country. Together with the Gdansk Go Club, the willing explored the secrets of playing Go. Art workshops awaited the youngest participants. During the event, visitors had the opportunity to admire two exhibitions: a photo exhibition by Agnieszka Kmieciak and Jacek M. Kozłowski "Japanese Notes" and an exhibition of calligraphy by Dr. Joanna Zakrzewska - Deputy Dean of the Faculty of New Media Arts at PJATK in Gdansk. There was also authentic Japanese cuisine served by Yaki Kingu and drinks based on original Japanese matcha from Yamamoto Matcha. The festival was highlighted by a performative retelling of Japanese tales and legends performed by Word Hunters. At the end, there was a Haiku Slam, or open Haiku poetry competition, in which both amateur and Tri-City poets participated.
We hope to meet again next year for the second edition of the Japan Festival at PJATK Gdańsk!
